6 Questions to Ask New Potential IT Hires During the Interview Process

Hiring new employees can be a tough task.

You want to make sure that you hire someone who meets the job requirements and has the skills necessary to succeed in their role, but oftentimes it can be difficult to know if this is actually going to be the case before they become an official member of your team.

Fortunately, there are some questions you can ask during the interview process to better gain a sense of whether or not a potential hire would be a good fit for your company.

1. What is your experience with IT systems in the workplace?

If you’re hiring for an IT position, then it’s important that this person has some actual experience working with IT systems in the workplace.

For example, if you’re hiring for a role with an IT support company, make sure they’ve actually worked in an IT support position.

This will help to ensure that they know what they’re talking about when it comes to any questions or concerns your employees might have about technology within the workplace.

2. Have you ever had to troubleshoot a system in the past?

Troubleshooting is an easy skill to overlook when it comes to hiring employees.

Although some people might not think that troubleshooting skills are necessary if they hire someone for a support role or some other IT position, this actually couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, troubleshooting skills are relatively crucial to any job in the IT industry.

For example, if someone works for an IT support company, then they need to know how to troubleshoot issues that might arise with anything from printers and copiers to computers and servers.

3. How do you deal with pressure when something goes wrong?

Even the most experienced IT professionals have to deal with some level of pressure when trying to resolve an issue or complete a project.

That being said, it’s clear that some people are better equipped than others when it comes to dealing with this type of stress.

Therefore, during the interview process, consider asking your prospective hire how they typically deal with pressure when something goes wrong.

4. Ask them to define some technical terms

Asking applicants to define some basic technical terms during the interview process is a good way of gauging their actual level of knowledge in the IT industry.

For example, if you’re hiring for an IT support position, then you can ask them to explain what is SSL as well as digital certificates.

If they’re able to do this effectively and efficiently, then it’s a good sign that they have a strong understanding of the technology industry.

5. What motivates you to succeed?

You might be surprised at how much just asking a simple question like this can tell you about a person.  That being said, it’s not necessarily something you want to ask every single potential hire.

Instead, make sure you save this question for applicants who are applying for IT positions.

For example, if someone applies for an IT support role within your company, then asking them what motivates them to succeed is a good way of gauging their level of passion and drive.

6. What are your goals for this position, both short-term and long-term?

Finally, asking your potential hire about their short and long term goals can help you get a sense of whether or not they’re truly invested in the company and the position they’re applying for.

In other words, if your new hire is only thinking about what it takes to get through the next few months of employment before they move on to their next job, then this might not be a good sign that they’re really going to be committed to helping drive success within your organization.

However, if they are able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the company and the position, then it’s likely that they will be both an effective and efficient employee.

Conclusion

Asking the right questions during the interview process is crucial to ensuring that your business, company, or organization successfully hires an IT professional who not only has the skills necessary to complete the task at hand but also one who will be a positive addition to your team.
