Comic Book Illustration: The Potential in Becoming a Professional Artist

The idea, design concept and story alone does not form a successful comic book. You have to be extremely intricate and careful in drawing a comic as it is dependent on a number of factors. What differentiates a great comic book from an average one is its ability to have an effective storyline and character appeal that it simply unforgettable.

You might be passionate to become a part of renowned comic book illustrators but before you begin to do so, you need to know that the industry of graphic novels and books is expanding at a rapid pace. If your intention is to outweigh the competition then you would have to take care of a few things.

Storytelling

The core purpose of a comic book is to convey a story. Therefore, you need to possess creative abilities that are not only visually appreciable but also keep the reader interested in the content. You should negate the thinking that the process of writing a comic is different from a book as both of these are based on the same notion. If the story were not an interesting read, then transforming it into a visual comic book would become meaningless as well. The genre of your comic can be on anything as long as it is readable by your audience. Study the demographics accurately and only then proceed with the writing and illustration phase.

Drawing techniques

Once you are sure about what you are writing the next phase is to select a relevant drawing technique. Not every comic book looks the same as every artist has his own drawing style. It needs to be artistic with no compromise on the anatomical attributes of the characters in the comic. You can either make the visuals colorful or you can stick to making it monochromic, the choice is entirely yours. Whether it is the gestures, poses, expressions or the style of your characters, you have to choose a certain drawing technique to keep a balance.

Character design

The entire story of your comic revolves around its characters. Whether it is the story based on one character or more, you have to give them a distinctive appeal that makes them stick out. You can achieve that by making their character design unique from the surroundings and environment of your book. A textual book does the same but in the form of words, however, that does not imply that it can be done easily in a drawing as well. Practice and devise the complete aesthetics of your characters and comic background only then your drawings will have a recognizable charm.

Use relevant colors

Some comic books tend to have colorful pages while some do not. However, adding color to a few elements or pages is the right approach since it enhances the readability level of the content. If your comic contains more than one sceneries or backgrounds then keep changing the color accordingly but make sure to follow a specific theme for it. This act allows you to make separations between the scenes of each page and it becomes easier for the reader to remember the story as well.

Practice makes perfect

Over time you will definitely become well versed about the different styles and techniques involved in designing but you should halt your learning curve there. Keep practicing as you might find a niche of your interest in the domain of comic book art. Start with a rough hand drawn sketch and gradually move to digital designing. If you are satisfied with the anatomy, structure and the expressions of your characters only then start to work on software and tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator but do not stop practicing and experimenting.
