NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 mobile is up to 35 percent quicker than the erstwhile mobile gaming champ. NVIDIA is removing the M designation from its GTX 1080, 1070, 1060 mobile chips. From now on, they will carry the same designation as their desktop counterparts. However, that does not suggest that the hardware is similar. In fact, now we possess a better idea of the difference. The credit goes to some hands-on time with the mobile GTX 1070 in Asus’ G752. 

Mobile GTX 1070 technical specifications

• Its base clock is 1,443 MHz
• The mobile GTX 1070’s boost clock is 1,645 MHz.
• It offers an impressive memory size of 8 GB GDDR5
• It offers a memory clock of 2,002 MHz

Intriguingly, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 mobile comes with 2,048 CUDA cores. However, the desktop version only features 1,920. The disadvantage is a slightly lower clock speed, about a 50MHz drop in core clock when shifting to the mobile. However, the memory clock does not deteriorate, staying firm at 2,002MHz. 

Features

Talking of features, the mobile 10 series cards come in the same set as their full-sized equivalent. Thus, we can infer that the existing suite of NVIDIA extras like PhysX, G-Sync, ShadowWorks, HairWorks, Surround, and the new set Pascal ushers in like Ansel, GPU Boost 3.0, DirectX 12_1 feature support. In fact, it also supports the new Vulkan API. 

The other big feature is that both the mobile GTX 1070 and 1080 are VR ready. In the past, we would see manufacturers squeezing cards like the desktop GTX 980 in just to enable support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. As expected, systems with VR support are growing more affordable and available. Indeed, they are no longer limited to the most massive gaming laptops around. 

But how does it function?

We have already discussed the specifications. Now it’s time to see how the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 mobile operates. 

Take note of the fact that the mobile versions of these chips can be tweaked by the manufacturer. In fact, the chips also are not available as standalone cards for customers, so the only time you will see them is in pre-assembled systems. The Core i7-6820HK in the Asus must not bottleneck the new GTX 1070. However, we can’t systematize the processor, as we usually tend to do with desktop video card testing. 

The GTX 1070 is notably quicker than the fastest single- GPU mobile solution available for laptops in the past. The name is the GTX 980M. 

In fact, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 mobile even surpasses the desktop GTX 980 found in the Acer Predator 17 X. Till this point of time, that was the fastest available GPU in a gaming laptop. Indeed, the GTX 1070 takes almost a 35 percent lead over that alternative in 3DMark. 

An overview of the performance

The GTX 1070 in the G752 is sufficiently capable of any demanding game you throw at in 1080p.
